Just as with other types of appliances, it’s not always clear cut whether it’s time to replace your air conditioner. There are a number of variables involved in the decision, and ultimately it will require weighing the odds.
When Do I Need to Replace My AC?
Air conditioners are big investments and usually last quite a number of years. When they begin to break down, it can be difficult to know whether they should be repaired or replaced. There are a few factors that can help you make your decision.
The $5,000 Rule
Many HVAC technicians use something called the $5,000 rule when giving advice to their clients. To utilize this trick, multiply the repair cost by the age of the HVAC system. If the number is higher than $5,000, it’s probably in your best interest to replace the unit. If it’s less, it might be best to repair it.
Energy Efficiency and Usage
While HVAC systems can last up to 14 or 15 years, you may want to replace it after 10 if you’d like something more energy efficient. The initial investment can save you money over time, though only if you use your system often. If you live in an area with mild temperatures and only find yourself using your HVAC system a few times a year, upgrading to an energy efficient model might not make a positive difference financially, unless your current one breaks down.
Your Refrigerant
If you notice that your air conditioner needs additional refrigerant, your system has a coolant leak. If your system takes R-22, the extra refrigerant will cost a lot extra, both due of the pounds needed and the required service call. Technicians recommend replacing your system if it has an R-22 refrigerant leak. In addition to the extra cost, R-22 is being phased out due to environmental hazards.
Frequency of Repairs
An HVAC system that needs frequent repairs should probably be replaced, as you’ll most likely be saving yourself money overall. However, if you’re utilities are low, your system doesn’t have a leak, and the required maintenance is minimal, it might be best just to repair the unit.
All in all, there is often no hard and fast answer as to whether it’s necessary to replace an HVAC system. The factors listed above can help you make an informed decision.
